Morocco is a sovereign country in North Africa with coastlines on both the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Bordered by Western Sahara and Algeria, it sits directly south of Spain, across the Strait of Gibraltar.

Divided into 7 regions, Morocco spans from a glorious Mediterranean coast along the north, through a mountainous centre, to sweeping Saharan desert in the south. This sheer diversity of landscapes makes it a traveller’s dream, while the population of 32 million is famed for its hospitality to foreigners, often inviting tourists for mint tea.

The soaring peaks of High Atlas are the tallest in North Africa, known by locals as Idraren Draren, or Mountains of Mountains, stretching almost 1000km diagonally across the heart of the country. Dissected by north flowing rivers, winter sports can be enjoyed from September to May in Oukaimeden, as can scenic treks from spring /to autumn. Besides High Atlas, the Rif Mountains encompass the northern tip of Morocco, scattered with idyllic towns like Tetouan, with its Spanish colonial buildings, and Chefchaouen, famed for its pastel-blue old quarter, also known as a medina.

Embracing the future but holding strong traditions, Morocco is almost entirely inhabited by a mix of Arabs and Berbers. Perfectly reflecting this outlook is Marrakech, the third largest city lying near the foothills of the snowy Atlas Mountains. The historical medina district is criss-crossed with narrow passageways and local markets, emitting a quintessentially Moroccan hustle and bustle, while the other half of the city contains modern restaurants and high-end brand shops. Medinas are found throughout the country: in Fez; one of the oldest and largest medieval cities on earth, and Casablanca; a modern, high-flying city featuring the third biggest Mosque in the world.

Considered a gateway to Africa, Morocco is the most visited country on the continent, receiving approximately 10 million tourists each year. This is reflected in the quality and quantity of ferry crossings from around Europe. The most popular routes embark from southern Spain, given the proximity, while long-haul sailings are available from across the Mediterranean Sea.

    Caught the late Friday boat to Ibiza, which was a great start to the weekend. Party time started once we left dock, sundowners, drinks and alive DJ. Just a bit slow to disembark foot passengers.
