Split Guide

Split is the second largest city in Croatia, resting on the southwest coast of the country, bordering the Adriatic Sea. The port is oftentimes used as the gateway to Italy, with crossings to Ancona on the Italian east coast typically ranging between eight and nine hours.

What is there to do in Split?

Croatia has become the king of tourist hotspots over the past few years, and Split is arguably the jewel in its crown. If Split is the main drawer for Croatia, then Diocletian’s Palace provides the same relevance for its host city; astonishing architectural structures encompass a wealth of amenities – shops, restaurants, bars and clubs adorn the centre of the breathtaking infrastructure. Admire the walls and spires that offer an insight into the fascinating history of the city before stopping for some quintessential Croatian cuisine – a whole day can be spent amid the stunning utopia. Much like the way Split has become an appealing entity almost separate from the rest of Croatia, the palace is occasionally the sole reason many visit the city.
The entire city is decorated in colourful houses and historic landmarks, especially Old Split which has defiantly staved off the demands of modern tourism and remained true to its authentic heritage. The architecture is perhaps the most aesthetically pleasing aspect of Split, but Marjan Park is a close second; verdant foliage next to tropical plant life creates a naturally exotic feel. After a day exploring the sights and basking in the natural beauty, head to the famously vibrant bars and clubs that attract a plethora of young people each summer. The main strip is graced by energetic and excitable young adults who savour the taste of the cheap alcohol and rejoice in the frenetic dance music.

How do you get around Split?

The centre is very compact can be covered by foot. The outside areas are usually best tread by bike or rental cars, whilst a bus system is in operation around much of the city.
