Rovinj is situated on the north west coast of Croatia in the Istrian Peninsula, bordering the Adriatic Sea. Many ferry routes depart the port, heading to Italy and Slovenia, including popular tourist resorts such as Venice and Piran. Crossings range from 1 hour 10 minutes to 4 hour 45 minutes.
The entirety of the Croatian coast has become a playground for holidaymakers and Rovinj is eventually succumbing to tourism’s relentless demands. The town is oftentimes regarded as one of the last remaining, authentic fishing ports on the Mediterranean, though entrepreneurs and business owners have capitalised on the increase in visitors by building numerous luxury hotels and fine restaurants. For a coastal town to grow, modernisation is simply inevitable. If you look past the modern buildings and souvenir shops, there is still plenty of charm and tradition evident in the Old Town – colourful houses line the streets and quaint cafes offer refreshments – hours can easily be whiled away amid the simplistic tranquillity.
The Old Town may be a particular haven of peace, but the entire town remains relaxed all year round. The summer sun brings the couples and families to enjoy the weather and romantic surroundings, but the abundance of bars and eateries still remain fairly roomy and comfortable. The only area that becomes slightly overcrowded is the beach, but even so it is possible to find some towel space to top op your tan.
Bicycle hire is very affordable and the paths and tracks lend themselves to an adventure on two wheels. The Old Town is quite small so it is possible to walk around all of it.
