The Dominican Republic is the second largest and most visited country in the Caribbean. It boasts a delightful average temperature of 26C and offers stunning mountain scenery, untouched beaches and beautiful colonial architecture making it an ideal holiday destination.
On the south coast lies the largest city and capital, Santo Domingo. It’s the cultural, commercial and political heart of the country so there’s no shortage of things to do.
While you’re there, be sure to take a stroll around the ‘Zona Colonial’, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Santo Domingo is also home to the oldest continually used cathedral in the western hemisphere, so don’t forget your camera. There are a number of historic monuments such as Fort Ozama and fascinating museums featuring Renaissance style art as well.
The perfect way to cap off a day of sightseeing in ‘La Capital’ would be to sample the vibrant nightlife. ‘Club Murcielago’ is situated inside a huge underground cave and is a great way to catch a glimpse of the locals performing the 'Merengue’ dance.
Outside the capital, the large stretches of idyllic white beaches in Punta Cana are perfect if you want to unwind surrounded by natural beauty. This is where you truly feel in paradise walking along the soft sand and gazing out at the crystal clear water.
The only port is located in the capital. It links The Dominican Republic with San Juan and Mayaguez in Puerto Rico, another beautiful country found immediately to the east. The service runs three times a week with an average sailing time of around 14 hours.
They are operated by America Cruise Ferries who offer a quality service with well-equipped vessels. On board you will find a well-stocked bar, televisions and even a fantastic nightclub for your late night entertainment.
